Spread the Warmth blanket drive week 2
We are two weeks into the blanket drive and Oklahomans are eager to “Spread the Warmth”! Blanket collection partners are receiving blankets and phone calls for more information daily. “We are glad people are interested in helping the individuals in our community who need blankets. The cold weather has made it impossible for people to stay comfortable without blankets. When the temperatures are freezing - people are freezing!” said Dave Goldman, Senior Director of Homeless Services at Volunteers of America Oklahoma.

Spread the Warmth
Brrrr! Temperatures are falling, and it’s cold outside! According to The 2013 Annual Homeless Assessment Report (AHAR) to Congress, on a single night in January 2013, 4,408 people in Oklahoma were homeless. In the Tulsa Area on average over 350 individuals stay the night at a homeless shelter, with only the items they can carry. There is something you can do!

“Bundle-Up” it’s cold outside
Brrr! Fall is when you start changing your wardrobe and add warm items to stay comfortable when you go outside! You probably have gloves, a hat, a few scarves, and undoubtedly many pairs of socks to choose from! Could you donate a new or gently used pair of gloves, a hat, a scarf or socks to help keep people warm? Donations are being collected for distribution at Volunteers of America Oklahoma, 61st and Mingo, Monday-Friday, 8 am to 5 pm through the end of January.

National Young Readers Week
It is important for children to learn to enjoy reading by example. When your child sees adults they look up to reading, they will be more likely to read for enjoyment too. This week November 11-15 is National Young Readers Week! This annual event co-founded in 1989 by Pizza Hut and the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress. Volunteers of America Oklahoma supports literacy by distributing books to many local schools and organizations to encourage reading enthusiasm. By distributing books to disadvantaged students who might not otherwise have the ability to purchase books on their own 2,773 students now have new books to read this semester.
