Tulsa area homeless, needy to benefit from Volunteers of America of Oklahoma’s “Project Warmth” campaign
(TULSA, OK) -- With more frigid temperatures in the forecast, Volunteers of America of Oklahoma, LaMode Cleaners and Western Sun Federal Credit Union are teaming up in January to collect gently used blankets, quilts, and comforters for the homeless and needy in the Tulsa area.
Beginning January 1, donations are encouraged at any of the 12 LaMode Cleaners and five Western Sun Federal Credit Union locations. LaMode employees are volunteering their time after hours to clean and fold the blankets. Volunteers of America of Oklahoma is distributing them to those in need. The campaign ends January 31.
Jim Light, owner of LaMode Cleaners, dreamed up the concept in 2004. “I had completed an internship from Leadership Tulsa with Volunteers of America of Oklahoma and, during that year, learned much about the wonderful work the agency does throughout the state. I wanted to come up with a way that my
business could contribute in a very tangible way to the clients served by Volunteers of America of Oklahoma. The campaign is in its seventh year and continues to exceed my expectations.”
“Volunteers of America of Oklahoma is very excited about the ‘Project Warmth’ campaign and is grateful to the sponsors for helping us provide these much needed items to the homeless and needy,” says John Selph, President / Chief Executive Officer of the non-profit agency. “We work closely with other providers of services to the homeless and needy throughout the year and, during these extremely cold days, we recognize the ability to stay warm is literally a matter of survival for many.”
Selph says Volunteers of America of Oklahoma is making the donated blankets available at a variety of human services agencies. “Any agency or ministry is encouraged to call us if they have clients in need,” he adds. “We will distribute as widely as the supply allows.”
Volunteers of America of Oklahoma’s state headquarters is located at 9605 East 61st Street and they can be contacted at 918.307.1500.
