Volunteers of America of Oklahoma to Serve Veterans
(TULSA, OK) Volunteers of America received a Department of Veterans Affairs Supportive Services for Veterans' Families Program grant in collaboration with the Community Service Council of Tulsa, Recovery Services of Oklahoma and the Mental Health Association of Tulsa. Volunteers of America of Oklahoma will receive $300,000 of the $1 million dollar grant.
The grant will be used to fund the Barrier Removal and Residence Exchange for Veterans, a program that will serve low-income veteran families in Tulsa, Cherokee, Creek, Muskogee, Okmulgee, Osage, Rogers, Wagoner and Washington counties.
”This program will allow us to become the representative payee for low-income veterans who need us,” said John Selph, CEO. The program will serve an estimated 500 very low-income veteran families who are residing in permanent housing but are at risk of becoming homeless and those who are currently homeless.
Through the program, housing advocates will work to rapidly house or maintain housing for veterans according to their needs and preferences and Volunteers of America will make sure the veteran’s bills are paid.
According to the Department of Veterans Affairs, the grants were awarded to agencies to help provide, in part, housing counseling services and temporary financial assistance, including time-limited payments to third parties for rent, utilities, moving expenses, security and utility deposits, transportation, child care and emergency supplies.
