One “overcomer” recently graduated from the Volunteers of America’s supportive housing program. Shayne describes the difficulty he had breaking the downward spiral his life had taken since childhood. Shayne experienced homelessness for more than 15 years. The struggle for a good night’s sleep and his next meal was always at the forefront of his mind. He moved from city to city to find the opportunity that eluded him until he arrived in Tulsa and was connected with Volunteers of America. Shayne’s first step to a new path started with quality, affordable housing, food, transportation, mental health counseling and social security benefits. Today, Shayne is employed and working diligently towards building a better future for himself. He has big, ambitious dreams; many centered on helping others end the cycle of homelessness.
Volunteers of America helps men and women like Shayne every day achieve their first step toward self-sufficiency. Volunteers of America serves over 2,500 Oklahoman’s annually with the primary goal of helping individuals thrive as productive members of our community.
The need to serve individuals experiencing homelessness continues to increase. Studies confirm that over 12,000 people are homeless in Tulsa and Oklahoma City. Now, more than ever, Oklahomans face an overwhelming demand for housing.
